Walling and building stone

Sandstone for walls that belong in the Lancashire landscape: drystone boundaries, mortared garden walls, extensions and repairs.

Close view of the same wall top: upright copes and a through-stone end visible in the face, buff sandstone with fresh faces.

Stone picked from the face, not the crusher

Walling stone is the stone we keep whole. As the face is worked, pieces with good beds and a usable face are set aside before anything goes near the crusher. The sandstone splits along its natural beds, so pieces come out with flattish tops and bottoms that sit well in a wall.

Close-medium view of a sandstone quarry face showing thin flat beds suited to walling stone above thicker massive beds, warm buff colour, overcast light, a few loose split slabs at the foot.
The beds decide the stone: flat beds give walling, thick beds give blocks.
